Par Hills wrestler rockets to Top 5 after injury rehab

Note: The following article is a reprint from the Daily Record. Writer Joe Hofmann comments Par Hills wrestler Tom Corigliano's recent comeback from injury. he edged out top-ranked Mike Trippler of Morristown 4-3. Colonial teammate Danny Tomblin came back from being down 6-1 to beat state qualifier Jack McNeil 10-7

Parsippany Hills’ Tom Corigliano was injured and had been unable to wrestle this year.

But the 135-pounder came back with a bang on Saturday.

Corigliano scored a pair of big victories and ascended to the top of the Daily Record’s weekly Top 5 individual area rankings.

Corigliano knocked off Morris Knolls’ Matt Herr, 4-3, and Morristown’s Mike Trippler, 3-1, in his return.

Corigliano is no stranger to heroic efforts. Last year, he won big IHC-Hill smatches against both Hanover Park and Mendham with pins.

He finished second in District 9, won a match at Region 3 and then lost twice to end his season.

He figures to go a lot further this winter.

“He’s making steady improvement,“ Vikings coach Matt Ciampa said. “He didn’t have a strong background. He missed time in midgets and is catching up. He’s improved a lot on top.

“One good thing about Tom is it doesn’t matter how he is perceived by anyone else. He’ll work every time he shows up to practice. He’s not one to rest on his laurels. He is always trying to improve. He is one of the hardest workers I have ever had.”

A Rey of hope

Hopatcong is rebuilding, but Zach Rey seems ready to make a run at the state tournament. Rey was one victory away from being an All-American in freestyle last summer and has continued to thrive on the mat. He beat Roxbury’s returning state qualifier, Mike Cancelliere, 7-3 on Saturday.

Rey went into District 2 last year with six wins, wound up beating Randolph’s Mike Garone and Dover’s Matt Adams, and placed second to Morris Knolls’ Adrian Rivas. Rey was eliminated from Region 1 by Kittatinny’s Nik Lasso.

“At the end of last year, he started to figure it out,” Chiefs coach Eric Fajerman said. “He did things naturally with his hips. Plus, he is as strong as an ox. We knew if he stuck with it, he’d be good. He is still pretty raw. We think he can go to the states.”

Last summer, Rey won the Ohio Tournament of Champions, a modified takedown tournament, over about 40 wrestlers in his weight class.

Transfer update

Randolph is set to welcome former Blair Academy 171-pound standout Jared Platt soon, according to four different people associated with Randolph and one with Blair.

Platt was fifth at the Ironman Tournament in Ohio and won the prestigious Bethlehem Tournament in December. He could not be reached last night.

Noteworthy results

Mount Olive’s Justin Vetrini came down from 112 and is knocking on the door of being ranked at 103. … West Morris’ Jeremy Adickes (140) wrestled well before losing to Scotch Plains’ Pat Mineo, 5-4. Butler’s Robert Bowman (now up to 135) majored Montville’s tough Nick Gaetta, 11-3.

Hanover Park’s Pete Latino had one of the best days of anyone at the Randolph duals Saturday, recording three pins. He saved his best victory for last, flattening Randolph’s talented Rob Garone in 29 seconds. Latino also pinned West Morris’ Adam Hodge in 2:49 and Scotch Plains’ Chris Pflaum in just 15 seconds. …

Morris Knolls Dan Herr enters the fray at No. 5 at 112 pounds. He took returning state qualifier Jack McNeil of Parsippany Hills into overtime Saturday before losing, 6-4. McNeil then lost a 10-7 verdict to Morristown’s Dan Tomblin. Herr majored Tomblin on the same day, 13-2.

Boonton’s Matt Regan (152) re-enters the rankings with a 6-4 victory over Mountain Lakes Dan Brennan.

Dover’s Carlos Escobar (Hwt.) beat Parsippany’s Kevin Hussey, 5-3, and then knocked off Kinnelon’s Tyler Blumenthal, 3-0.

Madison’s Nico Somers beat Pequannock’s Andrew Miller, 10-7, in a matchup of the area’s two highest-ranked 215-pounders. Roxbury’s Donald Bennett (135) pinned Mount Olive’s Eric DiColo in 4:33.

Parsippany’s Mike Adams, up from 215, beat Hanover Park heavyweight Tom Ottaiano, 7-2.

Hanover’s Dario Marcelli beat Jefferson’s John Barnnet, 4-3.

Lenape Valley’s D.J. Russo pinned Sparta’s Mike Roselle in 3:43.

Pope John’s Eli Blahut beat Newton’s John Connelly, 7-3.

Correction: Last week, Sparta’s Phil Takacs was listed with the 135-pounders, when, in fact, it was teammate Travis Helmlinger who was meant to be listed. My bad. Neither of them made the cut this week. …
