Clinic Recap: Maroon crew kicks off the season with a bang
The Maroon Crew wrestlers had an action-packed weekend, starting with a Jamboree in Hanover Park on Saturday and continuing into Sunday with the Roxbury Rumble novice tournament. The season is off to an exciting start, showcasing effort, team spirit, and the development of a strong community.
Team Highlights
Effort: Every wrestler gave 100% on the mat. Some of the most inspiring moments of the weekend came from matches that were lost, as athletes fought with determination until the very last second. This effort ensured that everyone learned and improved.
Team Spirit: The Maroon Crew stood out as one of the most supportive teams in attendance. Every wrestler had a big crowd of teammates and supporters cheering them on, creating an energetic and encouraging atmosphere.
Coaching & Community: The camaraderie among coaches, parents, and wrestlers is a testament to the program’s growing community. A special acknowledgment goes to Coach Brian Beslow, who supported the team even though his own wrestler, Magnus, was home sick.
Performance Highlights
- Robbie Finnegan: Rebounded from a tough first match to score 22 points in his second match, securing a 22-9 win. Even wrestling blind at one point due to loose headgear didn’t stop him!
- Cameron Mariano: Showed incredible determination, fending off his opponent’s half nelson until the last seconds in two hard-fought matches.
- Ben Whalen: Secured two exciting pins, demonstrating confidence and focus gained from practice.
- Ellie Brennan: Took on three tough opponents and showcased excellent stance discipline, downblock defense, and constant movement. Ellie’s talents extend beyond wrestling as she also participates in theatre and is a Girl Scout.
- Theo Rose: Competed at both events over the weekend. His solid stance and motion kept opponents at bay, marking significant improvement.
- Elliott Aberback: Wrestled his first jamboree and showed calmness and confidence, using basic techniques effectively against experienced opponents.
- Daniel Kulick: Impressed with relentless attacks on his opponents’ legs and picture-perfect finishes on his takedowns.
- Hunter Vanderveen: Balanced a busy weekend with wrestling at both events. His effort and leadership stood out, as he encouraged teammates and maintained a positive attitude.
- Ben Feese: Gained confidence in his second match of the jamboree, executing practice drills perfectly in live competition.
- John Nixon: Wrestled a thrilling first match of his career, which went into overtime. He bounced back with an 8-0 victory in his next match using sharp technique.
- Teddy Leiter: Demonstrated the effectiveness of fundamentals, using basic top-position techniques to control his opponents.
