Wrestling Programs

At Mo-Town Grapplers, we offer a structured development path for boys and girls from kindergarten through 8th grade. Whether your child is brand new to wrestling or ready for competitive league action, our programs are designed to meet them where they are—and help them grow both on and off the mat.

Our coaching philosophy emphasizes skill development, confidence, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship, while creating a positive and supportive environment for every athlete.

Pre-Clinic Program

Grades: Kindergarten – 1st Grade

The Pre-Clinic program is designed for beginner and novice wrestlers who are new to the sport.

At this level, the focus is on:

  • Learning basic wrestling movements and positions

  • Developing balance, coordination, and body awareness

  • Building confidence through drills, games, and structured activities

Pre-Clinic practices are fun, energetic, and age-appropriate. Most wrestlers in this program do not compete, allowing them to learn the fundamentals in a low-pressure environment.

Some Pre-Clinic wrestlers may be invited to participate with the Clinic program if they demonstrate readiness, maturity, and progress.

Practice Schedule:
• 1 practice per week
• No required competitions

Clinic Program

Grades: 2nd – 5th Grade
(Some 1st graders may be considered)

The Clinic program is designed for first- and second-year wrestlers who are ready for more structured practices and introductory competition.

Key components include:

  • Partner drilling and skill development

  • Learning match structure and basic strategy

  • Introduction to competition in a supportive setting

Clinic wrestlers participate in the King of the Mat Development League, which emphasizes learning and experience:

  • No score is kept

  • Matches are short and informal

  • The focus is on mat time, not results

Regular practice attendance is important at this level, as techniques build progressively throughout the season. Competition is encouraged but not mandatory, and additional novice matches and tournaments are available for interested wrestlers.

Practice Schedule:
• 2 practices per week
• 4–6 Saturday competitions + end-of-season KOM tournament

Junior Varsity (JV) & Varsity Programs

Grades: 3rd – 8th Grade
(Or wrestlers with 2+ years of competition experience)

The JV and Varsity programs are designed for experienced wrestlers who are ready for higher-level training and team competition.

These programs focus on:

  • Advanced technique and conditioning

  • Consistent partner drilling

  • Match preparation and strategy

  • Commitment to team and individual improvement

Wrestlers compete in organized youth wrestling leagues:

  • Junior Varsity: Future Stars Wrestling League

  • Varsity: Tri-County Wrestling League

Varsity rosters are determined internally, with weight classes ranging from approximately 50–165 lbs. Both leagues provide structured schedules and conclude with league tournaments.

Regular attendance is required to participate in league competition. Exceptions may be made for middle school wrestlers competing with their school teams.

Practice Schedule:
• 3–4 practices per week
• Most weekends and some weeknight competitions

Girls Wrestling Program

Grades: 2nd – 8th Grade

Mo-Town Grapplers proudly supports girls wrestling at every level and offers dedicated opportunities for female athletes to train, compete, and build camaraderie.

All girls in the program receive:

  • At least one girls-only practice each week

  • Additional co-ed practices based on level

  • Age-appropriate competition opportunities

Girls Clinic (Grades 2–5)

Designed for newer wrestlers learning fundamentals and introductory competition.

  • Girls-only practice once per week

  • Co-ed practice option available

  • Informal league competitions and novice events

Girls JV / Varsity (Grades 6–8)

Designed for experienced wrestlers ready for higher-level competition.

  • Weekly girls-only practice

  • Multiple co-ed practices

  • Weekend and weeknight competitions

The girls program emphasizes confidence, skill development, and team culture while preparing athletes for competitive success.

Program Progression

Wrestlers typically move through our programs as they grow in age, experience, and confidence:

Pre-Clinic → Clinic → JV → Varsity

Progression is based on:

  • Age and grade

  • Wrestling experience

  • Practice attendance

  • Readiness for competition

Our coaching staff works closely with families to ensure each wrestler is placed in the program that best supports their development.
